Inscribed X in the Circle
Posted by: Don Kiyoti

Though the source of the circled X/lightning bolt is interesting, I find it much more relevant to ask: "What purpose does the circle/bolt motif serve in the comic"? NOTHING seems to have been written on this, which is odd. Usually these symbols are followed by a small dot, like a period. Does this mean they are initials of some kind? What do these symbols mean/how do they function in context? They are totally mystifying to me and I'm surprised the wealth of Krazy Kat scholarship has not attempted this yet.

I grew up in the 1960's and remember Krazy Kat as a Saturday morning cartoon. "I have a habit of saying, "Ignatz! You poor widdle mouse!" Anymore, there are few people who have no clue as to where it came from.

As a cartoonist I always site George Herriman as my Guru. I have read a lot of comic art over the years, but never anything as profound or wonderful as Krazy Kat.

Thank you for putting up such a wonderful site. I hope more and more people keep discovering his magnificent art.

I just discovered Krazy Kat
Posted by: Kevin

I just discovered Krazy Kat this very night and have fallen in love with this strip. The idea of a cat who loves a mouse who throws bricks at his/her head is genius. I've been going through strips and some are funny and some confuse me, perhaps humour has changed some in 80 years. I look forward to reading more and discovering more.

I see King Features owns the characters and so I sent off an email to them seeking permision to recreate some of the strips into animated shorts. I'm a classically trained animator who is unemployed with little to do and thought it would be a fun project. As I explained to them I could do it as a fan project and skirt legal issues but would rather do it as an officially licenced project.

I guess we will see what the powers that be think of my idea.

Thanks for this great site, I look forward to further exploring it and the world of Coconino County.

And I can so relate to poor Krazy being madly in love. I've had a good many bricks aimed at my head in the past and enjoyed everyone of them. sigh

Karzy Kat line
Posted by: Nick the Rat

This is in reply to Bill, about the line "Every day my eye grows keener, my good arm stronger, my silly enemies more futile." That line is from a Krazy Kat strip, dated March 20th, 1938. Instead of "eye," Ignatz says "mind." It's in the book The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics. I have no idea if it's in print or not, but my copy was published in 1987 (it's the 6th edition). I'm not gonna tell you what happens, because that kills the joke! ;)That line stuck with me, because it makes me think of going to school...

I have an 8X10 drawing of Krazy Kat, ignatz and offissa pup with coconino county scenery. My great uncle was a close friend of George Harriman. It was given to him and the inscription reads "to Harry Frandsen mit luff and dewotion" signed Geo Herriman.
I would like to sell this original to a collector. Could you give me information on how to place a value on it and where to sell it.
Thanks, Jay

The BIG Funny Papers of the Olden Days. . .
Posted by: Robert the Sag

I am such a lucky fellow. I am now eighty years old, born in 1929. I always looked forward to reading Krazy Kat in the Sunday paper, that in those days printed the funny paper strips in huge format, on really large pages. The world is now a smaller, tighter, painful little place.

some more stuff for your bibliography
Posted by: Jacques Q.

Hello. The bibliography resource on the site seems to be slightly not that greatly up to date, so here a few hints :
1/ apart from the "year by year" Fantagraphics reprints, their "big books" are worth noting, including everything that's in the smaller ones except the cover art (not original Herriman, anyway) ; vols. 2 and 3 are available (covering 1925-1944, with volume 2 reprinted after a first limited 1000-copy edition, but there may never be a third edition, so hurry) ; vol. 1 should come some day ; expensive but worth every penny ; if you can, buy them in shops rather than online, Fantagraphics' delivery service is a sheer horror (living in France and the books not being distributed by Amazon or the like, unfortunately I had no such choice, and BOTH my copies arrived in a sad, sad condition) ;
2/ also from Fantagraphics : "The Kat who walked in beauty : The panoramic dailies of 1920", a huge, beautiful book, that presumably will not be reprinted when exhausted, so also hurry ; this one can be had from Amazon &c. (sorry about that, Mr. Fantagraphics, but it was your choice in the first place to ship your own books in lousy packagings...) ;
3/ and finally, from Pacific Comics Club (http://www.pacificcomics.com), 3 small, wonderfully crafted volumes of dailies covering 1921, 1922 and 1923 ; also a limited 1000-copy edition, published 2003-4-5 ; presumbaly there will be no further volumes ; my copy of the 1921 book is # 707, those of the 1922 and 1923 ones are around # 570, so not that much time to lose, folks... AND it is a pleasure to exchange with Mr. Tony Raiola and his Italian-American waay of explaining things !
Hope this helps some of you Kat lovers !

Tito and his Burrito, along with the Fox and the Crow, were in DCs Real Screen Comics, later changed to TV Screen Cartoons before ending in 1961.

As for Krazy Kat,I have looked at a few of those old comic books. They were not by Herriman and are only of real interest to any complete collectors of anything involving Krazy Kat.I even forgot which company did them.

I remember reading Krazy Kat in comic book form when I was very young. I was born in 1946 so this must have been early 50's. Boy, I wish I had thought to keep those old comic books. I enjoyed Fox and Crow, too. One character I also remember was 'TITO and his BURRITO' but I forget which comic book they were in.

The 1946 Krazy Kat book
Posted by: Richard Ranke

When I was 15 I found this book in my grandfather's basement.my maternal grandfather,Bill Braucher, had worked for the NEA Syndicate and had written for Our Boarding House for close to 20 years.(He had been dead for years by then, but my grandmother, who still lived there, let me have the Krazy Kat book.
I had remembered the cartoons, but this was a whole new world.I saw what Herriman's strip had really been like in terms of design, characterization and continuities.I saw George Herriman's marvelously surreal world of Coconino County-and realized the cartoons seldom captured this at all.
Ever since I have been a Krazy Kat Kollector-and now that Fantagraphics has only one issue to go in their Sunday Page reprint series I am hoping there will be a series which reprints the dalies.I would love to see the FULL Tiger Tea story.

Since then I bought four Krazy Kat books (FantaGraphics) and I LOVE it ! As english is not my mother language and as Krazy's vocabulary is quite bizarre, i just understand, maybe 50% of it. But that's enough to feel the poetry of it, and I wouldnt'y buy a french traduction (I know there are a few), I'm pretty sure I would loose more than I would win...

King Features Syndictae cartoons
Posted by: Richard Ranke

During the early 60s,KFS contratced Paramount cartoon studios to make cartoon versions of a few of their comic strips. They were Krazy Kat(which was my introcution to the whole setup),Beetle Bailey(which was somehwat faithful to the strip)and Snuffy Smith(which had original strip-stars Barney Google and Spark Plug as semi-regulars).I am not sure how much Mort Walker or Fred Laswell were involved or consulted on the cartoons(probably not much)and of course,Herriman was 20 years dead.Interesting that the 60s Krazy Kats stayed a bit truer to the Herriman style than those theatrical Columbia Krazy Kats made in the 30s(which I only remember vaguely...but what I remember had nothing to do with Herriman's strip).

Mary, keep looking at the dailies, Herriman quoted Bruegel and flemmish baroque paintings in some panels.
By the way did you mean that Krazy was saying that the coffee was a lare over the lare of milk, in Ignaz's 'coffee-milk'(the hillbilly term for Capachino)or that it was filed on a shelf under milk?

I think that once you have been to New Orleans you will carry some part of that with you for the rest of your life. I read that George Herriman lived here for a short time during his early childhood. It seems like he never left. There is a Sunday paper cartoon in a book that I used to have before Katrina that had to with coffee. Ignatz wanted coffee with milk. He asked Krazy where is the milk? Krazy of course, said it was Unda the milk.Where else but New Orleans(in the U.S. not Europe is the milk and coffee part of the culture here. He may not have lived here long, but he soak up everything about this place.

There is a reference to Herriman's Tiger Tea in Nabokov's novel PALE FIRE. Nabokov, a lover of comics, arrived in the US about four years AFTER the Krazy Kat "Tiger Tea" episode of 1936-37. My question is: Was did the Krazy Kat strip run in any European papers (especially Germany or France) between World War I & II.

Krazy & Ignatz : "a wild warmth of chromatic gravy"...1935-36.
p.20

likely refers to the Republican National Convention and the party's rejection (as depicted via
Ignatz-ian brick) of Theodore Roosevelt. The Kat's odd
depiction is thus a result of his here being a stand-in for
Teddy -- complete with stringed-spectacle-eyes and brush
mustache (though lacking the usual identifying TR teeth --
how much more bizarre a rendering of the Kat THAT would have
made!); the TR caricature seems to have expressed itself, as
well, in making "Krazy" so peculiarly fuzzy -- i.e. Teddy Bear-ish.

The date cited for the cartoon, June 22, was the date of
Taft's re-nomination, so, a formal rejection of Roosevelt; if
that happened early enough and Herriman worked fast enough
and the New York Journal came out late enough, the cartoon
could be a specific reaction to that, but it needn't be: the
rejection of Roosevelt was in the air.

I meant to reply to this one when it was submitted. The Medicine Wheel is a Plains Indian concept - more attributable to Native Americans north of Arizona. But Navajos and Hopis did have similar symbols, and Herriman likely took it from patterns evident on blankets and pottery in the area.

I don't know if they ever met -- Diebenkorn was 23 years old when Herriman died in 1945 -- but he was definitely a Krazy Kat fan, and Herriman was quite probably an influence. I attended a show at Wayne Thibaud's San Francisco gallery of art work influenced by Herriman in 1997, and there was Diebenkorn work included. Diebenkorn was a contemporary of surrealist Elmer Bischoff, who acknowledged Herriman as an influence.

I was wondering if anybody knows of a connection between Richard Diebenkorn's "Urbana" of 1953 and George Herriman's Krazy Kat. I know that Diebenkorn taught at the University of Illinois, but was there a personal/business relationship between the two?

Just a reminder that posts to this forum are moderated. This means that they do not appear immediately when submitted -- I review them for relevancy first. I don't approve every post. The rules of thumb are simple: it has to be about Krazy Kat or George Herriman. If you post a stunning analysis of the second world war, I am not likely to approve it, unless I can see how it clearly relates to the main topic. I will approve messages that might be controversial, such as the discussion on Herrimans racial background, but I will censor inflammatory entries that are not on topic and would not contribute to any kind of healthy or illuminating dialogue about Herriman, as I have this morning. There are plenty of places on the web where you can express yourself. This is a friendly board about a comic strip and artist.

Spammers, such as the persistent one with all of the gambling posts, should also be aware that there is a human moderator here blocking your posts. You can waste hours trimming the size and format hoping that will get them through, as this one did, but it won't work. This is not a free advertising platform. It's not even a paid one - I have never had any interest in making any profit off of this website. So advertise elsewhere, thank you.

While I am certainly no expert on American Indian culture, growing up in Utah it was always my understanding that this "circled x" symbol was called a Medicine Wheel. On its most basic level I believe it is a representation of the four directions. I'm not certain as to which tribe(s) it is significant.

Herriman's race
Posted by: Peter Campbell

Herriman's race is a somewhat current topic. I was approached to be interviewed for a film on cartoonists of color recently and passed, and I've participated in threads on the subject on the Comic Strip Classics mailing list (at Yahoo! Groups) and the Fantagraphics message board. I've seen scans of the birth certificate, for what that's worth. My read on it was that the idea that Herriman was of Creole birth is quite plausible. I don't know if it's provable, and, more importantly, I don't really care. By this century, with Curtis, Boondocks, JumpStart and a host of other quality strips by African Americans in the paper, there's no case to be made that race has anything to do with talent in that arena.<br />
<br />
Where the topic has gotten heated -- and I think you enter this territory as well -- has been in the question: If Herriman was of African descent, how could he have perpetuated racist stereotypes, as he did in &quot;Musical Mose&quot;, or, as you're asking, not been more culturally aware and included more (or any) Navajo characters in a strip that takes place in Navajo territory? Why did he try to &quot;pass&quot;? And my reply is that you can't ascribe a modern sensibility to an artist who died over 60 years ago. These are very PC concerns in our time. They weren't on the cultural radar screen in Herriman's time. Herriman loved the Southwest, and, from what I've read, certainly wasn't rude or dismissive of the Native Americans that he met. But he lived in New York and Los Angeles; hung out with Sportswriters, cartoonists and reporters, and his strip covered the territory he knew, not the one he visited.<br />
<br />
Certainly, doing a strip like Musical Mose today would be an affront to decency, regardless of the cartoonist's ethnic makeup. And leaving Navajos completely out of a strip set on their land would be worse than the movie &quot;Beaches&quot;, which took place in the culturally-diverse SF Bay Area and had little or no non-white actors, even in walk-ons. But we are much more sensitive to that type of thing now. The stereotypes were accepted and expected in his age -- that was what people found funny -- and cultural insensitivity was the norm. Does it make him a bad person, or just a product of his times?

thinking about race
Posted by: john Peters

Have you ever noticed that there are no tribal people in Coconino? There are a few Mexicans or Mexican/Americans and a couple of Chinese, even a person from India (at least once) but there are no American Indians as far as I can see, neither are there any Afro-Americans. The most of the cast are anlgo-american or European vistors or emagrents from Europe. And those are often French or German.
By the way what dose 'colored' mean to you? I was taught that Arbibs and Hindus were white but I run into persons who think that Greeks aren't white, even today! Much has been made lately of Herriman's race and I know that he was listed as 'colored' on his birth record but can we really know what that ment, if we don't know what colored ment the the white southern male clerk who listed him as such.
Has any one seen his parents birth record or naturalizion papers?

Couple weeks later there was a knock at my door and I opended the door and there was a large box with a red ribbon. I opened the box and there was a tiny, thin, black kitten.
Two friends suddenly appeared, all smiles....I looked at this scrany kitten and thought, oh, I wanted a cute little kitten...but did not say anything. I named her Mehitabel since I had the book and had her for 19 years. She adored me and me alone. Followed me all over the house, even sat on tub while I bathed. She was a darling cat.

The encircled X does show up in one sandpainting and is also a Mississipian symbol, in both cases the world is that which is symbolized. With no hard facts I will venure a guess, the X is the wheel of fortune and the bolt is fate.

The Krazy Kat cartoons which were shown in syndication during 1963 and 1964(and at various places from then on)were one of the better attempts to capture the style and the setup of Herriman's comics-using many of the regular Herriman cast.Besides Krazy,Ignatz and Offisa Pupp there was Kelly and Mrs.Kwakk-Wakk.Paul Frees did a good job with all the characters-and Penny Phillips' Krazy Kat voice was...unique,anyway.Now that I have read and collected many of the original Herriman strips I know that the cartoons left a lot to be desired, but they did provide me with a foundation when I did go on to study the greater Herriman work.

In high school, my nickname was Ignatz, which was coined by the trombone player in our band. I played clarinet. So it is true, a clarinet player should want to hit a trombone player in the head with a brick or two! That is what a clarinet does!

When I was 4, had a Shkeezix rubber doll. Cousin Popeye would've been honored! Chewed his (Shkeezix') tail down about a half-inch!

We (Pittsburgh Presh) had Little Beaver in our comics as well, and listened to Mayor LaGuardia read the comics to us over the radio Shunday mornings. Yesh!

you remember freddy the rat well
freddy is no more but
he died game the other

he was with a bad eye

if i bite you once
said the stranger you won t ask

the thousand legs who gave you hydrophobia
i got it by biting myself said
the stranger i m bad keep away
from me where i step a weed dies
if i was to walk on your forehead it would
raise measles and if
you give me any lip i ll do it

they mixed it then
and the thousand legs succumbed
well we found out this fellow
was a tarantula he had come up from
south america in a bunch of bananas
for days he bossed us life
was not worth living he would stand in
the middle of the floor and taunt
us ha ha he would say where i

you want any of my game i was
raised on red pepper and blood i am
so hot if you scratch me i will light
like a match you better
dodge me when i m feeling mean and
i don t feel any other way i was nursed
on a tabasco bottle if i was to slap
your wrist in kindness you
would boil over like job and heaven
help you if i get angry give me
room i feel a wicked spell coming on

last night he made a break at freddy
the rat keep your distance
little one said freddy i m not
feeling well myself somebody poisoned some
cheese for me im as full of

freddie the rat perishes
Posted by: paul s

"freddie the rat perishes" is a poem from "archie and mehitabel", a compiliation of a syndicated column from the New York Herald Tribune by Don Marquis in the (?) late 1920s or early 1930s. Archie is a medieval french vers libre poet reincarnated into the body of a cockroach in the H-T newsroom. He types by doing a swan dive on each key from the top of the typewriter. (Since he can't hold down the shift key, there's no caps.)

Freddie has just eaten some rat poison and feels his end is near, when he is threatened by a tarantula up from South America on a banana boat that has been terrorizing the neighborhood. Come on, my many legged friend, sez freddie, i am as full of death as a drug store. A homeric battle ensues, after which the crowd buries freddie with all due honors off the fire escape. That's how I remember it, at least.

I was born in '34, and remember reading the Sunday comics, spread out on the living room floor. The great thing about the comic pages in those days was that you didn't have to know how to read to get some idea of a story line. "Krazy Kat" has always been my favorite. Anyone remember "Smokey Stover"? We were poor, but didn't know it! Having to learn how to entertain ourselves was a blessing that few childen have knowledge of today.

Interpreting the 5/3/31 page
Posted by: Richard Cohen

In "Krazy & Ignatz: The Komplete Kat Komics 1931-1932 A Kat A'lilt With Song" editors Blackbeard and Ataker include an endnote expressing puzzlement over the 5/3/31 episode. They may have rejected as pedestrian the all-a-dream possibility, but the events shown taking place could be Krazy's dream, a fantasy in which he's as unconcerned at the prospect of a wetting as Pupp & Ignatz are panicked by it -- so, a Kat-fancied attitude reversal.
The rain threat is naturally invoked because
(as the last panel MAY show) Krazy sleeps
(and dreams) by a running stream, notably oblivious to the actual hazard of being wetted
by it.
Wetness concerns seem to have been current.
The very next episode, 5/10, involves cat-like disdain for water: Krazy showers under an umbrella.

Or, for a more tortured idea: you might argue that the black cloud -- never depicted as getting bigger -- never gets closer and in fact drops its rain elsewhere; the panicked-at rain when it
finally arrives has slipped from its far source along a downgrade, to end as a skinny rivulet, harmlessly gliding past the sleeper. "Rain IS coming" Krazy had acknowledged, but knowing he wouldn't get wet, he didn't panic.
To know the lay of the land in Coconino may require "Krazi-ness" -- but the Kat has it.

Both of these schemes require a recognizable stream -- a problem here, where there's no color to help out.

I'd be interested in comments/objections and in other explanations of the episode too.

Richard

Other Great Komics
Posted by: Vincent Alexander (Age 12)

George Herriman has made some of the very greatest Komics to ever hit the newspapers. Each sunday kat has SOMETHING in it, at least, that makes me laugh... and I can't say that about ANY other strip.
But there ARE a few great komics that are not written by Herriman.
These are some of my favorites and their Herriman inspiration:

Calvin and Hobbes/ by Bill Watterson
Calvin and Hobbes was one of the greatest things to ever happen to the comics... he says, in THE CALVIN AND HOBBES TENTH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION that his biggest inspiration as a kartoonist was Krazy Kat.

Peanuts/ by Charles Shultz
Charles Shultz (needless to say) is one of the true geniuses of the komic world. He also loved Krazy Kat, he once drew Charlie Brown getting socked by Ignatz with a brikk.

Garfield/ by Jim Davis
Garfield kracks me up quite often, it doesn't surprise me a bit it's as popular as it is. There is a Garfield logo box where Ignatz beans Garfield with a brick. All the great ones love Krazy Kat.

Bone/ by Jeff Smith
Bone is not a newspaper komic, it's a series of komic books. Jeff Smith said it was like "placing Bugs Bunny in the Lord of the Rings". It's obvious most of his inspiration komes from Pogo, but I can see a little Krazy in there, somewhere.

Sam's Strip/ by Mort Walker and Jerry Dumas
Sam's Strip is a universally unknown komic. The entire strip is about Sam inviting komics from other komics to kome on his komic. His kountless enkounters with Krazy and Ignatz show either Mort or Jerry has a fascination with George Herriman. (The book: Sam's Strip Lives is one of the rarest komic books ever made, but you kan find a few Sam's Strip komics in THE KOMICS SINCE 1945/ by Brian Walker.

Pogo/ by Walt Kelly
Walt Kelly said once that Krazy Kat was his favorite komic. I believe Pogo started in 1945, so it picked up right about where Krazy Kat ended.

Mutts/ by Patrick McDonnell
There's no question THIS guy loves Krazy Kat. To prove it Patrick wrote a book, kalled: "The Komic Art of George Herriman".

There are other klassics of kourse, Foolish Questions, Dilbert, the Far Side, Happy Hooligan, The Upside Downs, Shelocko the Monk and Count Screwloose of Tooloose

Hey, I can remember from when I was a kid watching Krazy Kat cartoons. I think they were part of the Captain Kangaroo Show, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know where I can get/buy copies of these cartoons?

Thanks.

Krazy's gender again
Posted by: Pauli Kohberger

I own the Krazy sunday strips anthologies, and I've noticed that a lot of people are referring to him as a girl. I know his gender is pretty ambiguous and in the comics (and e.e. cummings' essay) he's shown as a girl, but every time he's talked about in the comics he's always referred to as a male. Case in point:

<a href="http://img119.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img119&image=krazyguy.gif" target="_blank"><img src="http://img119.exs.cx/img119/1929/krazyguy.th.gif" border="0" title="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>

Understandable why they changed his gender from place to place, though. Just for clarification.

Response to "Krazy Girl?"
Posted by: Charles

Someone posted a comment about Krazy being a male or female.

The answer is...neither. IMO, Krazy is transgendered.

Krazy can act more "macho" in some strips, however, Kat's more femine in some strips.

In the 1962-64 animated series, however, Krazy was permantly female. This was however, done, because homosexuality wasn't allowed in cartoons back then, so they decided to make Krazy a girl cat and stayed that time.

Coconino County In My Mind

Ignatz mouse still pulls his tricks, causing trouble; throwing bricks.
Coconino County in my mind.
Krazy Kat still loves him so, just like all those years ago.
Looking deep into my mind I find.
That old Offissa named Pupp never, never will give up.
Love is silly. Just as well it's blind.
Trees in plant pots still abound. More and more I find they're found.
Coconino County in my mind.
Never could just leave that one behind.

That "Kurious" X-symbol
Posted by: kat lover from Maine

I just found this site and I'm delighted. I've been a "Kat" fan since I was a little kid in the '50s. I just bought the new McDonnell/O'Connell/DeHavenon book on "Krazy". Great piece of work.

I've got a kwestion for all kurious "Kat" lovers --- what's the significance, if any, that Herriman invested in the circle-with-the-X symbol that VERY frequently appeared in the strip? It pops up everywhere. Is it something out of Navajo culture, or a quirky little something he made up?

Hi, Daniel!

Well, rest assured, the pay at the enterprizing dot-com "krazy.com" is nothing to crow about. I serve as manager, webmaster, tech support and janitor, and I make zero dollars an hour. Technically - since I pay monthly fees for hosting, provide all of the equipment, and donate all my time, the pay is about negative $10k a year. Thankfully, it's rewarding work!

An interesting trivia bit about George Herriman is that he was one of the few people to get a raise during the great depression. It helped having a boss (Hearst) who was a great champion of his work. I'm lucky enough to have a second job that pays my bills and supports the money-losing krazy.com enterprise, but have grave concerns about a nation that talks a lot about unemployment numbers and says nothing about the trend to not only eliminate jobs and cut pay, but to move more and more people into contract work or meager self-employment with no benefits or health care. These are desperate times for many of us. Good luck with your job hunt. Do capitalize those I's and use your spell-checker. It's competitive out there.

Reading the Text/Old Eclipse Editions
Posted by: Peter Campbell

On the old Eclipse editions - the current series of Krazy + Ignatz books being published by Fantagraphics picked up where the Eclipse set left off, and they do intend to republish the ear;lier material, I suspect when the unpublished material is finished. There's a lot of info on current KK publishing (and I need to add some updates) in the "News and trivia" section of the web site.

As to display problems, my stock answer is "update your browser". This site is designed to be best viewed in 6.x and up browsers - IE 6, Mozilla/Firefox, Opera. It's designed to be readable in much older browsers, text-based browsers,a nd mobile devices (I test it regularly on my PalmOne Treo). Where it has the most problems is with browsers that don't conform well to web standards. the worst ones in question are IE $ and 5, and Netscape 4, where they implemented enough code to acknowledge stylesheets, but didn't really understand them. I speak in more techy detail about the way this site was designed on the "Site Notes" page, but, in a nutshell, the primary purpose of the site is to honor Herriman's work; the secondary purpose is for me to test out my web programming skills. I try and do it in the most compatible way possible, but I program to current standards (4.0, xHTML), not older ones, so some compatibility is lost.

Hi Doug,

No, you're not krazy, vol. 9 is "Sheda Soft Mongolian Tear". I don't think it is currently
in print, altho Fantagraphics did have a very few
of the others in one of their previous catalogs.

There was a rumor going around a few years back
that the 1st nine were going to be republished.
But I haven't heard any rumors recently.

You might be able borrow them thru your local
public library's inter-library loan service.
Because they are hard to find, a lot of libraries
are not willing to lend them (Communications
Library at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana probably still does not).

Oops!

I've been very busy with school, work and family and apparently allowed some rather juvenile commentary to reside here for a month. My apologies! While censorship is not a personal goal, wildly irrelevant and particularly pointless posts to this guestbook aren't really welcome. Discussions about Krazy's questionable gender are welcome; professions about your own sexuality or questions/comments about others that have nothing to do with Krazy kat or Herriman are not. So I have reinstated a moderation function that I thought (incorrectly) it was safe to remove.

Posts will appear here after I've approved them, which will normally be within an hour or two and no later than half a day. I'm notified at my main email account, which I check very regularly. It's an annoyance that I have to impose this. I hope the children who inspired this action are filled with glee at their accomplishment - someone should be happy about it!

While I'm here, let me remind you that this guestbook is only one of many places to discuss all things Krazy. I highly recommend joining Krazy + Ignatz or Comic Strip Classics at http://groups.yahoo.com. In the CSC group, we recently had a rousing discussion on the question of George Herriman's racial background, which most experts report to be Creole, with some African, but others debate.

The Strip
Posted by: Gary Rexroad

I began drawing cartoons in 1973 or so...an art professor that always gave me a "d" rather than flunk me (Jerry Meatyard) gave me a book of Krazy Kat strips. I loved Pogo and immediately loved Krazy Kat. The dialogue is truly as American as Twain, the strips drawn with imagination. Herriman and Walt Kelly are my two definitive cartoon heros as they weave words with backgrounds in such a way better than anyone. As you can see I am a fan. And this site is a fitting tribute. Good work.

My gang thought I was nuts because I thought Krazy Kat was funnier than Popeye, Washtubs or Moon Mullins. Although, Toonerville Folks was high on my list--and, I could draw Alley Oop or any of the comic characters of the nineteenthirties with great facility,I lacked the wackiness of wordssmithing to become another Herriman.
Aah, those wondrous days, when we escaped the reality of the depression for a few minutes with the imaginative and philosophic thoughts of the genius of Herriman and J>R> Williams. Oh, didnt I tell you about him? The cowboy , machineshop ., boardinghouse philosopher? I hope he is on the internet . Just discovered it at age 80.

To Rick ...Maybe your relationship will last depending on which side of the brick you remain. Now matter how the relationship is looked at, whether it be undaunted love or unhealthy obsession on both parts, their attachment to one another goes back to aintshunt Egipsheen times, and are bound by the brick into eternity. Which is the best Krazy collection?

Hello, your website is most appreciated!
It was awesome to discover Krazy Kat while working in the 'stacks' division of a library. I loved the strip for its cool art, incorruptible sweetness, and dissemination of good vs.bad... In the two years I worked there during high school, no one ever took out Krazy Kat out of the basement, which was fine with me.

If a person with limited means (ahem) wanted to purchase one good Krazy book, what would you recommend? Also, does anyone have insight about those Krazy enamel pins, made in 1920's(?) that show up sometimes on ebay? I wondered how they came to be. Thanks!

There are two vintage Krazy Kat dolls that I know of - the really old (1920's?) one pictured in Mabel's hands on the Herriman page here, and the ones released by Hamilton Gifts/Presents in the mid-880's. I have a few of the latter, but every time the old one shows up on EBay it goes for $300-$1000 and I just don't have that kind of cash to blow. A beat up one sold on EBay yesterday or $300. I've seen a recently published notebook, but no keychains...

I have well meaning plans to photograph all of my collectables (it's a decent collection) and put up another page here. Someday soon. Maybe when the kid (4) is in college. ;-)

Don't wish to open a can of worms here but..
Just wonder what people think..
Is Krazy a girl or a boy or do you think it doesn't matter?

reprinted herriman
Posted by: Peter

I've read about Bill's plans (he participates in the Comic Strip Classics mailing list - info on joining in the Bibliography). I know that Stinging Monkey Press in Canada also hopes to continue publishing the Krazy Kat dailies, although that won't be on as aggressive a schedule as the Fantagraphics Sundays books (a new one is due very soon).

I'm pretty excited, as the non-Krazy stuff is hard to find. Bill has previously published collections of Baron Bean and The Family Upstairs (where Krazy and Ignatz first were presented), but these are now way out of print and very hard to find.

Hello, I have received news that Bill Blackbeard, faithful comic strip salvager, is reprinting some volumes entitled: The Complete Daily Comic Strips of George Herriman Before & After Krazy Kat.
They are gonna be oversized volumes by Spec productions in the future (??). I'm certainly excited by this news, and if this is new news to any of you out there, I'm sure you'll be excited by it too.
And also, great website! Thanks for the good work!

Hi Everyone. Go to the Library of Congress American Memory web site at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amhome.html and follow the search link. If you search for Krazy Kat you'll find three cartoons from 1916 that you can download.

Thanks to Peter for this great site.

Posted by: ignatzwill

in the early 50's, at the age of five, I saw a rerun of this cartoon in our local newspaper. It had a wonderful affect on me, almost put me in a sort of trance. We moved away that year, and the paper in our new town didn't carry Krazy Kat. But the memory of my brief visit to Cococino country haunted me for the rest of my life.

It was worth a shot..
Posted by: Andrew Gilmore

Hi! My name is Andrew and I'm a huge fan of "Krazy Kat". I think George Herriman's was one of the most brilliant creative minds the world has ever known.
After reading enough of Krazy to get the hang of Herriman's style, and having drawn cartoons for several years prior to discovering Krazy, and furthermore having a great affection for all varieties of wordplay and semantic tomfoolery, I thought it might be interesting to try something of an imitation of Herriman's style. So I created a strip called "Hobo Hijinx" (Incidentally, I draw it privately for my own amusement. I am not a professional syndicated cartoonist, but a mere 16-year-old from Philadelphia who is creatively inclined). I have shown the strip to some of my teachers at school and they love it, so I realized after a while I was on to something! I might as well mention, though, that I am in no way claiming to be as much of an artistic genius as Herriman himself. I draw "Hobo Hijinx" to have fun being creative and to express my admiration for Herriman's work.
Sorry for this all this rambling, but I thought my fellow Krazy fans might be interested to know about this, even if it is only a personal project..I don't think I have the time to scan in any of my "Hobo Hijinx" strips, but if any of you are curious, I could write out transcripts of the dialogue or something like that (which is just as well, since my drawings look like c--p).

Adios, amigos.

Tiger Tea: Lost Beverage of the Ancients

A post-prandial rumination of the most random sort has left my thots run aground on the sholls of serendipity and sorrow. Were is this tea of tigers. It has been sad decades since last it soothed my brow. Our poor world is the sorrier since its disapearance. O beverage of deliverance save us from savage coolers of wine and fortified antacids.

Hello, arrticle
Posted by: Peter

Robbie - there are certainly holes in my bibliography, and it's exciting to hear about any dditions. I've ordered the book from Amazon, and will update the page when it arrives.

Emma - We actually gave our son the middle name "Ignatz" (and, yes, my wife liked the idea). At age four, he has yet to complain about it - or make a clear connection as to the source - but we'll see how it goes when he's older. :-)

If, of course, any of your work gets web-published, please send a link! Being an admirer of Herriman didn't stop Charles Shulz or Bill Watterson from coming up with worthy successors.

hello hellu!
Posted by: emma mouse

I just fell clean in love with krazy kat when I first saw it. It inspired me to use emma ignatz mouse as my username for a theatre discussion board I am a member of..now, the name has stuck, whenever I go to the theatre they call me emma mouse! (they probably have difficulty pronouncing/ remembering ignatz) ahem! just showing my embarrassing devotion to all things krazy!
In England, hardly anybody has heard of Krazy Kat or Herriman apart from a few notables of the comics' cognoscenti. I am trying to redress the balance. I myself am trying to eke some life out of comics with my scribbles and illustrations and find Herriman's work a constant source of inspiration and envy.

Posted by: Peter Campbell

Oh, well. Chances are that you missed it, but someone lacking a life took the opportunity of unrestricted access here and used it to post childish garbage that was somewhat offensive. Take my word - this was not stuff that you would care to read, not creative, and not of any relevance to Krazy Kat. So this is now a moderated discussion board. Please don't hesitate to post here - as I said below, anything on topic and politely worded is welcome. I will approve posts that aren't obscene or offensive in nature ASAP. Oh, and I also fixed the comments page, so you can feel free to contact me privately as well by clicking my name in the footer of every other page. Thanks!

Your bibliography doesn't include the
recent re-publication of Robert Warshow's
essay's, "The Immediate Experience".
That book, published by Harvard
University Press, which contains a brilliant
article by Warshow about Krazy Kat. The article is a review of the
first printing of the book with the
Cummings introduction. The essay is
fabulous (only about 5 or 6 pages long)
as is the rest of the book. Thanks for
keeping such a great site!

There is a greater fan than myself. I read the Archy and Mehitabel in second grade. The stories made me fall for the writings of E.E. Cummings and most importantly the works of George Herriman (esp. Krazy Kat). What a perfect creature/creation was Krazy. Sexual, but which sex? Unconditional, but for love? Pride and promise without prejudice. Thank you for your support and belief for the world of Krazy/Herriman.

Hi from Sweden,
It looks like I will be the first to give you any comment. As Herriman is my favourite cartooner I am glad I found this page - as it´s a good one too. Me and my 8-year old daughter has done a simple animation for everyone too see. It is made in Flash, so you need the flashplayer as your browsers plugin.

I´m also making a longer try with Krazy, as I soon will release.

Welcome!
Posted by: Peter

Welcome to the Tiger Tea Room! This is the place to post your comments and questions about Krazy Kat and all things Herriman. It's been a long-time plan of mine to put a guestbook/chat function on the site, and I finally made the time to do it. This will be a good place to ask those obscure questions and inquire about Krazy collectables, which I am far from an expert on.

Housekeeping: This board will be lightly moderated to remove really annoying things. As I have received simply rude emails from time to time, I assume that the same will happen here, and we will all refrain from replying/encouraging them until I notice it and delete it.

Formatting: HTML won't work here, so if you want to share a url, just type in the address, don't try to format it as a link. In a related note, there is no spell check or ability to edit your posts, but, if you email me I'll do my best to quickly make a correction for you.

If/When the page gets too long, I'll set up an archive and move some stuff there. If you want to reach me privately, you can still use the email form linked to my name in the page footer.

Enjoy!
